LISTEN, HE'S SAYING, "I LOVE YOU"
by: Dean Sheets
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16
Was ever love so mighty as to become the fountain from which such an ocean of grief came rolling down? Listen, the Father is saying, “I love you.” He says it in the agony sounds of Gethsemane, the whispering ship, the dripping blood, the hammering of anvils, and the mocking crowd. In so many ways He says it: in the sunrise, the sunset, a baby’s cry, a blushing rose.
He has always loved you. “I have loved thee with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3). His love for you didn’t begin at the cross. Long before the stars in the pre-Edenic world sang together, God was love. Down through the passing ages, His eye of compassion followed man as he struggled along bowed beneath the burden of sin. Everlasting love! Oh yes, nothing can separate us from it (see Romans 8:35-39).
“I was praying for a full understanding of the cross,” said hymn writer George Bennard. “I saw Christ and the cross inseparable . . . The scene pictured a method, outlined a process, and revealed the consummation of spiritual experience. It was like seeing John 3:16 leave the printed page, take form, and act out the meaning of redemption.” It was out of that vision that his gospel song “The Old Rugged Cross” was born.
God’s love is a “great love” (Ephesians 2:4).
